Information at the speed of thought

I wonder how information availability has improved over the years. Flying on a plane I imagine why is the world always shown as north pole up and south pole down while it really doesn’t matter which side is up. It is not only in maps but also outer space images where the world is always shown with north pole up. It took me a two hour wait for the flight to land and then plug in my data card to find out a relevant replies (Thanks to Google!). I am eagerly expecting internet technology to be available soon in all flights so I do not need to wait even for that time to complete journey. I was also wondering what would have happened if it were ten years ago. I would definitely have to wait till I reach back home for I would surely not able to find time during a business trip to visit a browsing center. Twenty years back it would have still been tougher with internet not easily accessible and not much maturity in information available via internet. Just think at a point of time where no internet was available. I would have to spend hours at the library and trust my luck to find an answer. In a matter of fifty years information availability has grown to a level where the common man has access to most of his curious questions. It also raises a question in my mind if our generation with most access to information is that knowledgeable as compared to previous generations? I have to Google for a reply 🙂
